The reason Pixar is so successful is because creative geniuses like John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Brad Bird, and of course, Pete Docter know storytelling. For instance, when I went to see Up in 3D this evening, there were several moments of unabashed weeping. Not single-tear-rolling-down-the-cheek weeping, more like silent-convulsions-my-mascara-is-running bawling. They were tears of joy.
- Not enough projectiles being thrown into the crowd. I was a little disappointed with the 3D experience. Not that I want anything gimmicky ahem Dreamworks ahem, I could just use a little more Coraline-like 3D effects. (Watch for the cool 3D-ed Pixar logo at the beginning and end of the film.)
- Octogenarians make me nervous. Some points in this movie were like watching my dad’s senior softball games: you just can’t relax enough to enjoy the show. Don’t throw out your back, gramps!
- Talking dogs are always funny. Okay, this is a lie. One of the movie previews we saw was for G-Force, a film about talking guinea pigs who are also spies. Nice try, better luck next time, Disney.
- Chubby Asian kids are endearing and non-threatening. Although I have been known to explicitly threaten people, I’m pretty fucken endearing, so case closed there. Shit.
- Toy Story 3. For serious…
