Be like the bluebird

You love the thunder

Last night, I experienced the biggest thunderstorm of my life. Yesterday had been rainy and thundery on and off for the better part of the evening, but it didn’t get really outrageous until early this morning. At about 5:30 am, the thunder actually woke me up for a good twenty minutes*. Not only was it terrifically loud, it was also very intense, and felt like it was right above my house. I may have lost a bit of sleep, but in the end, thunderstorms in the middle of summer symbolize what Seattle weather is all about.

Seattle is characterized as being rainy and wet, which is mostly definitely is. Of course, it rains far more in other parts of the country, we just have less of it spread across more months. The secret that we Seattlites don’t like to share is that all that rain is to feed our plants and prepare for beautiful, breathtaking summers.

I’ve always loved a good summer in the Puget Sound; everything is green, the sun is out but it isn’t too hot, and there always seems to be a lovely breeze right when you need it. Even in the dead of morning while lightning struck all through the Pacific Northwest, the thunder seemed to wrap around me like my blanket while I slept.

* Keep in mind that I have a talent for sleeping. I can sleep on a plane, on a bus, during a concert, at a table (while sitting), and usually thunderous noises have no effect on me, making last night’s disturbance to my slumber that much more pronounced.

Unquoteable

I was kind of an ass in high school and I used to think it was really funny to throw made-up quotes around:

In the words of Beatrix Potter, ‘I hate you so much right now, it’s like, not even funny.’

It seemed really funny at the time, but less so now.  I guess that’s just what happens as time goes by – somehow I always used to be so lame, and thank goodness I’m so cool right now. Except for right now, I actually am really cool. Seriously.

The point is, a really witty or insightful quote would be a great way to start off a new blog, but it occurred to me that I don’t know any good quotes (that would be approrpriate, at least). So for now, a haiku from Threadless:

Haikus are easy

But sometimes they don’t make sense
